Moderate Evening Conditioning Hike

May 7 (Saturday) 8:30 A.M.
Clear Creek Day Hike
. This is a great 10 mile hike with gradual inclines and beautiful scenery. We will meet at the Starbuck's parking lot off Wedge Parkway and car-pool to our destination, then do a car shuttle to drop off vehicles at our end point. Due to the length, this is a moderately strenuous hike, so please be sure you are able to hike this distance. Recommend sturdy trail shoes, dress in layers, bring plenty of water and lunch. May 8 (Sunday) 8:30 A.M.
Carson Valley Hike--Genoa Area
. Hike along the foothills of the Carson Range on the Eagle Crest Trail ending in Genoa. We will learn some history of the area and have a chance to look for the grave of Snowshoe Thompson and an optional visit to the Mormon Station Historical Site at the conclusion of the hike. Poodle Mountain (6958') Day Hike (exploratory)
. Poodle Mountain is the high point of the Poodle Mountain Wilderness Study Area directly north of the Smoke Creek Desert and it should give us great views of the playa to the south and the Granite Range to the east. We might even be able to see Lassen and/or Shasta to the west. Our hike, depending on how far we can drive, will be about 5-6 mi RT with about 1000' of elevation gain. From Reno the drive to the trailhead will be over 3 hr each way which will mean an early start. This WSA is also part of Friends of Nevada Wilderness Wild Washoe Wilderness Campaign. McClellan Peak Flume Day Hike
. Historic Virginia City flume system on McClellan Peak near Carson City. Hike will be along a portion of route of circa 1870 wooden box flume which brought water from Carson Range to Virginia City. About 10 mi., 800 ft gain. Some off trail. High clearance 4-wheel drive vehicle necessary, or possible ride share. Learn some history of the area. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Moderate.

Lahontan Shore
. Lahontan Reservoir, near Silver Springs. Enjoy silence and stark beauty along the shoreline. 6 miles total in-and-out, nearly zero gain. View Tufa formations. Near reported location of "Mark Twain' hotel described in a flood of Carson River. 1$ cash per person State Park fee. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Easy.

Moderate Moonlight Conditioning Hike
. Get in shape after work with an moonlight conditioning hike of 4-6 miles at a brisk pace. we will start around sunset, and hike for a couple of hours by the light of the nearly full moon, in the hills north of Reno. May 22 (Sunday) 8:00 A.M.
Juniper Peak, Sahwave Range, Dayhike
. Juniper Peak is the highest point within a potential wilderness designation southeast of Gerlach. Travel across the remote Kumiva Valley and then hike to this peak in the granite-rock Sahwave Range. See wildflower blooms, view a spring or two, and catch sight of the Black Rock Playa at the top. About 5 miles RT, all cross-country, with 1800' elevation gain. Trip limit 12. DOK. Leader: David von Seggern (775-303-8461; vonseg1@sbcglobal.net). May 22 (Sunday) 8:45 A.M.
Mt. Davidson Day Hike
. This outing begins near Geiger Grade Summit and winds both on and off-trail to Mt. Davidson. Trip is about 7 miles and 1,200 feet of gain, but very steep downhill of about 2,000 feet into Virginia City. We plan on lunch on the peak and time to check out some old diggings nearby. Participants must be in good shape for this hike. We will hike into V.C. and have a cold drink before taking a shuttle back. Car Shuttle required. Trip limit 15. Participants must all sign-up as individuals so we can stick to our trip-limit. Dogs must be well-behaved and have a leash for V.C. and be able to squeeze into a car with others. DOK. May 27-30 (Friday-Monday) open
Black Rock Rendezvous
. This annual event is a "Great First Trip to the Black Rock" as it typically includes speakers, guided tours, visits to hot springs, rocket launches, rock hounding, a Dutch Oven cook-off, drawings, and similar events. Co-Sponsored by Friends of the Black Rock, BLM and Friends of Nevada Wilderness, we'll be camped on the edge of the Playa about 15 miles north of Gerlach. Family event, bring your RV's and trailers, it's dead flat and we'll have portable toilets but no hookups! Come prepared for primitive camping but w/ portable toilets! Ham License? Bring your radio as there will be lots of Ham activity too! Dogs on leash, be prepared to pick up after them. LNT!
