April 3 (Sunday) 8:30 A.M.
Carson Valley Trails
. Hike the foothills of the Carson Range on this shuttle hike from Clear Creek to Jacks Valley Road. We will be looking for birds and studying the spring wildflowers so bring your binoculars and field guides. Distance is almost 11 miles. ND. Leader: john ide (321-525-2050; johnide1@yahoo.com). April 5 (Tuesday) 5:30 P.M.
Tuesday Evening Hike
. The Tuesday evening hikes are planned to accommodate most hikers, regardless of condition. We will use a moderate pace, cover 2-4 miles typically, and stay under 600' elevation gain. Conservation issues, as appropriate, will be highlighted along our walks. Trip location will be announced on MeetUp (http://www.meetup.com/Sierra-Club-Hiking-Reno/events/calendar/) by Sunday evening prior to the Tuesday hike. DOK. April 6 (Wednesday) 5:30 P.M.
Wednesday Conditioning Hike
. Join us to get in shape for weekend hikes. Hikes will all be between 4-6 miles in 2-2.5 hours in different locations surrounding the Truckee Meadows. Pace will be moderate to moderately fast. Learn about local flora and fauna. Bring plenty of water, clothing for weather, and trail shoes highly recommended. Dogs welcome, but must be well-mannered and have a leash just in case. Sawmill in the Desert Day Hike
. Near Buckland Station/Silver Springs, along Carson River. 9 mi loop; mostly flat. Remains of a sawmill operation and current route of the railroad, with 100 year old bridge, on rail line to Hawthorn. Hike a portion of the route of the Carson and Colorado Railroad, circa early 1880's with an original wooden culvert. A few enigmas. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Moderately Easy.

Leader's Choice Desert Hike
. Depending on the weather conditions, we'll pick a great place to get out and explore the Nevada desert on this first day of spring. Trip will be around 6-8 miles and may have over 1,000 feet of gain. Bring a camera for some scenic shots. Bring plenty of water, lunch, and clothing for conditions. DOK. Spanish Springs Peak (7406')
. Postponed due to predicted rainy weather.
Moderate Day Hike/Peak Bag of Spanish Springs Peak at 7406 feet. Expect lots of glorious wildflowers; and if we're lucky we'll see a few antelope and golden eagles. Five miles and 1,500 ft to the summit; half of it cross-country across volcanic terrane. Learn local geology and wildlife. Moderate hike, not for beginners. ND. Leader: Ridge Walker (853-8055). Would You Be Lost Without a Leader? Beginning Map and Compass Class
. Would you be Lost without a Leader? This class is for you! We'll meet Sunday at Noon and conduct the "classroom" portion of the class in a parking lot at a south Reno trailhead near McCarran & Longley. Then we'll do a short hike to "put it into practice" and finish up 2 or 3 pm. We'll talk about different types of compasses, how to find your location on a map, easy navigation tricks, and talk briefly about GPS but this is Not a GPS class! Leader is a SAR guy and has used map and compass for years. Feel free to bring a compass but trip leader will supply maps & compasses! Dogs on leash OK, be prepared to pick up after them. April 16 (Saturday) 9:00 A.M.
Mayberry Park to Hunter Creek Falls Day Hike
. This outing will be a strenuous 9 mile hike that starts out with a short climb to the Steamboat Ditch Trail and then will be relatively flat for about 1.5 miles before starting the climb to Hunter Creek Falls. The spectacular water fall at the 4.5 mile mark makes for a perfect lunch spot, with a great photo opportunity. Then, the return to Mayberry Park will be all downhill and relatively easy. Bring lunch, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Bad weather will cancel. Well-mannered dogs okay; have leash in case it is needed. DL. Leader: Rhonda Jarrett (775-662-8698). April 17 (Sunday) 9:00 A.M.
Stevens's Trail Day Hike
. A great spring hike down to the American River near Colfax. Hike is about 6 miles, but steep downhill around 1,800 feet decent and then climb out on nice, windy trail. Beautiful scenery with scrub oak, mossy rocks, and very green. It may be quite warm in April, so clothing should be layered. We'll have lunch at the river. There is poison oak off the sides of the trail in places, so dogs should be on a leash. Trip limit of 15. DOK. Leader: Holly Coughlin (ladyhiker1@att.net). Twin Peaks (6592') Day Hike
. Twin Peaks are northwest of the Smoke Creek Desert and just a few miles north of Burro Mountain. Our hike will be about 10-12 mi RT with about 1800' elevation gain. The north twin is the high point of the Twin Peaks Wilderness Study Area and should provide some pretty nice views of the Smoke Creek playa as well as four or five other WSAs in the region. Most of these WSAs are part of the current Friends of Nevada Wilderness Wild Washoe Wilderness Campaign to provide permanent Wilderness protection to these areas. We'll learn about the current status of the Campaign and what we can do to help assure success. ND. Leader: Larry Dwyer (775-745-6628; kdwyer31@charter.net). Strenuous.

Buckland Station downstream
. Buckland Station near Silver Springs. This is a 10 mi loop, 0 gain, From Historic Buckland Station downstream along Carson River enjoying riparian habitat. Return on segment Pony Express Trail. Learn some history. $1 per person State park walk in fee. Option to tour remains of Fort Churchill on your own after hike. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Moderate.

Gandolfo Canyon Exploratory Day Hike/Peak Climb(?)
. Gandolfo Canyon LWC (Lands with Wilderness Characteristics) is located in a northern spur of the Shoshone Mountains between Mt Airy Pass (Hwy 50) and Railroad Pass (NV 722). This will be an exploratory trip where we may attempt to summit Dee BM (7988') and/or Emigrant Peak (7848'). Representatives from Friends of Nevada Wilderness will join us to explain the "LWC" designation and how this area could become a full blown Wilderness Area. We should also experience some outstanding views of the Smith Creek Valley to the west and the Reese River Valley and Toiyabe Mountains just to the east. There will be about 3 hr drive each way and the hike will be 5-10 miles RT with 1500-2500' of total elevation gain. Please contact leader for further details. ND.
