On Saturday hike to the highpoint of Volcanic Hills (5-6 mi and ~1000' total elev gain) while exploring the incredible rock formations and keeping an eye out for Bighorn Sheep. There should also be spectacular views of Boundary Peak and the north end of the White Mountains. On Sunday we'll head to Rhyolite Ridge for another exploratory hike and, if time permits, check out The Sump (it's on the map...). We will evaluate these areas for their wilderness character and learn what Friends of Nevada Wilderness is doing to protect them. Weather this time of year may be an issue so be sure to contact leader for further details. ND. Leader: Larry Dwyer (775-745-6628; kdwyer31@charter.net). Moderate.

. We will hike along the Martis Peak Road up to the Martis Peak Lookout where we will have supreme views of Lake Tahoe. We will lunch at the top while enjoying the beautiful views and exploring the lookout. The elevation gain is +1750 feet, but well worth the trip up to the top. Incandescent Rocks Day Hike
. This is one of my favorite desert destinations. This hike is in the Virginia Mountains near Pyramid Lake. We will climb about 1,200 feet as we wind through a desert canyon and then down a different drainage. The hike is about 7 miles, but moderately strenuous as we are off trail for parts of the trip. Great vistas and balancing rocks. Plan on bringing 2 plenty of water, lunch, and layer clothing for fall conditions. Well-mannered dogs, okay. May be cancelled if weather conditions are bad. DL. Leader: Holly Coughlin (ladyhiker1@att.net). Co-Leader: James Call (freneticarmot@gmail.com). Moderately Strenuous.
