October 4-10 (Tuesday-Monday) TBA
Utah Peaks II Hikes
. Plan to summit 3 peaks in Utah and one in eastern Nevada on our return. This will be an exploratory trip because I've never done any of these peaks. The current plan is to hike Black Crook Peak (~3 mi/2000' elev gain) and Lewiston Peak (6-10 mi/3000-4500' elev gain) on Wed and Thur, have a rest day on Fri and then hike Deseret (~9 mi/3900' elev gain) and Goshute (4-6 mi/2800' elev gain) on Sat and Sun. There will be a day of travel time on each end of the trip. These are all peaks on the Great Basin Peaks list so come and learn more about the Great Basin Peaks Section of the Toiyabe Chapter. All plans are subject to modification based on weather and people. Also, keep in mind that hunting season starts in early October. Please contact leader for further details. ND. October 8 (Saturday) 8:30 A.M.
Pt. Moriah Loop Trail
. A nice hike off Old Hwy. 40 in the Soda Springs area. The midway point offers spectacular views of the mountains, valleys, and overall Sierra Beauty. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss of just over 1,000 feet. The trail is nice under your feet, not boulder-y. Plan to carpool from Mae Anne and McCarran, Kohl's/McDonald's parking lot. Bring water, snacks, and lunch. Be prepared for weather this time of the year. October 9 (Sunday) 9:00 A.M.
Hidden Valley Highland Loop
. Great fall hike above Hidden Valley with views of the entire Truckee Meadows and valleys to the east. Trip is moderately strenuous even though it's only 6.4 miles with over 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Bring good trail shoes, poles would help, lunch, and plenty of water. Well-mannered dogs welcome, but must have a leash for walking in the park to get to the trail head. DL. Leader: Tom Fusso (hammer360@gmail.com). Moderately Strenuous.

Looking for Autumn Leaves
. Buckland Station near Silver Springs 10 mi loop, 0 gain, From Historic Buckland Station downstream along Carson River enjoying riparian habitat, fall leaves. Return on segment pf Pony Express Trail. Learn some history. $1 per person State Park walk in fee. Option to tour remains of Fort Churchill on your own after hike. ND. October 15 (Saturday) 8:30 A.M.- 3:30 P.M.
Saw Tooth Trail
. This will be a long but relatively easy hike through mostly forested woods with several vista points that offer good views of the Truckee River Canyon and peaks around Donner Summit. The hike is 9.5 miles in length with some elevation gain. Bring plenty of water and something to eat for lunch at the half way mark. We will meet at Mc Donald's off N. Spooner Summit Fall Colors Hike
. Hiking through the aspen groves around Spooner Summit. We will either head north toward Marlette Lake, or south along the TRT, depending on weather/trail conditions. Expect to see turning trees and busy squirrels and Clarks Nutcrakers preparing for the winter. Ten miles round trip with up to 1500' elevation gain. DL. Leader: Ridge Walker. (853-8055). October 17 (Monday) 8:00 A.M.
Fire & Ice
. Fire and Ice, Machado Postpile, Carson Pass area. Existence confirmed in 1990. Hexagonal basalt columns possibly millions of years older than the Devils Postpile near Mammoth. “Fire” was the lava; ‘ice’ was the glaciers, evidenced by numerous large erratics and glacial striations. Five mi total on in-and-out; 800 ft, Not on trail. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775 -530-2935). Moderately Easy.

October 21-23 (Friday-Sunday) Call for Details
Last Hot Springs trip of the season and Orionid Meteor Shower
. No signups until after 10/10. Must call leader at 775-843-6443 by 5:00 10/19 to sign up. Signups through website not accepted. High clearance vehicles preferred, 4WD not needed. We’ll spend Friday night about 90 miles N. of Reno at a Hot spring near Gerlach, balance of trip will depend on playa conditions. We may cruise through the site of Burning Man and check on their clean-up. We’ll likely visit another hot spring and camp there Saturday night. Bring all water, shovel for personal needs, LNT, possible potluck Saturday night. DL. Leader: David Book (775-843-6443). Easy.

October 23 (Sunday) 9:15 A.M.
Mt. Davidson Day Hike (Postponed until November; weather permitting)
. This is a great, but tough hike in the Virginia Range above Virginia City. Trip is about 8 miles and 800-1,000 feet of gain, BUT a STEEP downhill into Virginia City of 2,000 feet or more. Most of the hike on trail, however some off-trail, too. Great vistas of the Sierra and desert to the east. We will do a car shuttle. Plan on a stop in V.C. for a cool libation. Must have 2 liters of water, really good trail shoes, clothing for weather conditions, and poles may be helpful. Trip limit of 14. Goblin Knobs/Reveille Range/Confusion Hills Exploratory Trip
. Goblin Knobs is a fascinating area at the north end of the Reveille Range and southeast of the junction of US Hwy 6 and the Extraterrestrial Highway (NV Hwy 375)--what better place to celebrate Halloween? We'll leave Reno midday Friday to drive out and camp somewhere in the Goblin Knobs area that night. On Saturday we'll explore the area, hiking 5-8 miles around and up several of the "goblins" with about 1000-2000' of total elevation gain. On Sunday we'll head about 50 miles north to explore the Confusion Hills which may be just as interesting as Goblin Knobs. This exploratory hike will be 3-4 miles and 1000-1500' of elevation gain to the high point of Andesite Ridge. While there, we will evaluate both of these areas for their wilderness character and learn what Friends of Nevada Wilderness is doing to protect them. Nevada Day Hike
. Come celebrate our State and ourselves making in through one more year with the traditional peak bag of our local landmark, Peavine Mt. (8300'). We will try to find a good route up the "backside". Ten miles, 3300' elevation gain. Expect to learn a lot about the diverse habitats we will be climbing through, and if we are lucky, see some of the migrating mule deer. DL. Leader: Ridge Walker.
