January 1 (Wednesday) 10:00 a.m.
New Year's Day Hike
. The annual New Years Day Hike is the occasion to put all the excesses of the holiday season behind and start off the new year with a plan for healthy living.  We'll meet at 10 AM to accommodate the late-night revelers and hike until about dusk.  Location is subject to weather and ground conditions but will be close to the Truckee Meadows.  Dress appropriately.  DOK. January 4 (Saturday) 10:00 a.m.
Beginners Cross-Country Ski
. Beginner's cross-country ski trip in the Mt. Rose Meadows. Learn the basics from other Sierra Club X-C skiers: How to fall down, how to get up, and ski on the flats. Must provide your own equipment. Half-day trip. Bring lunch, water, sun-screen, and warm clothing. ND. Leader: Ridge Walker (853-8055). Co-Leader: Valerie Andersen (853-4769). Moderately Easy.

January 5 (Sunday) 10:15 a.m.
Loop Hike North of Spanish Springs Peak
. Approximately 8 miles moderately strenuous loop hike in Pah Rah Range north of Spanish Springs Peak. Mostly cross-country with maybe 1,400 total elevation gain. Meet at Burger King at 10:15 a.m. at the corner of Pyramid Highway and La Posada for approx. 10 minute drive to trailhead. DOK. Leader: Martin Mace (775-742-2085; mace.martin@gmail.com). January 9 (Thursday) 6:30 p.m.
Monthly Program Meeting at Bartley Ranch
. Guest speaker Lynn Garfield will discuss hydrology in the Reno area. 6:30-7:00 social; program begins at 7:00 p.m. Bartley Ranch is located off Lakeview Dr. in S.W. Reno. Check Caron's article for more information. ND. Leader: Holly Coughlin (ladyhiker1@att.net). Easy.

January 11 (Saturday) 9:30 a.m.
Chickadee Ridge Snowshoe
. Snowshoe trip starting at Tahoe Meadows to the ridge commonly known as Chickadee Ridge because of the Chickadees that frequent the area. Observe and learn about this amazing little bird. Trip is about 5 miles in length with 1,000 feet of gain to the ridge. Must have some experience snowshoeing. Clothing for weather, lunch, and plenty of water. DOK. January 11 (Saturday) 8:00 a.m.
Sawmill in the Desert Dayhike
. Near Buckland Station, south of Silver Springs, along the lower Carson River. Trip is about 9 miles in a loop, mostly flat. See and ponder the remains of a sawmill in the desert and then see the current route of the railroad, which serves Hawthorn. We will hike on a portion of the route of the Carson and Colorado RR, circa early 1880's. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Moderate.

January 19 (Sunday) 9:00 a.m.
Pah Rah Petroglyph Hike
. Day hike in the Dry Lakes basin of the Pah Rah Range east of Sparks. Hoping to find prehistoric petroglyphs and galloping antelopes as on trips gone by. Bring lunch, water, and wear layered clothing. 10 mile RT and 1000 feet of elevation gain. DL. Leader: Ridge Walker (853-8055). Co-Leader: Karen Todd (225-2805). Moderate.

January 25 (Saturday) 8:00 a.m.
El Dorado Canyon Dayhike
. Hike outside of Dayton. Trip is 12 miles RT with under 600 feet of elevation gain. Riparian habitat with many crossing of small stream. Lunch at a natural arch. Also, a small slot canyon to view on the way out. View remains of a Comstock era lodgings sign painted on a boulder. Learn some of the history of the area. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935).
