Moderately Fast-Paced Conditioning Hike

August 5 (Sunday) 6:00 a.m.
White Mountain, near Bishop, CA
. Day hike in the White Mountains. 14,250 foot elevation. On a 'jeep road', about 16 miles RT with about 2,500 feet of gain. Hikers must be experienced and well conditioned, and must have hiked with the leader prior to this event. Conditioning hikes will be offered prior to the event; please contact leader ASAP for sign up/conditioning hikes. At least one over night stay required due to very early start needed; two would be safer to avoid driving back to this area in the dark on the day of the hike. Perseid Meteor Shower Campout
. We'll head up Friday evening and be camping mid-playa about 20 miles north of Gerlach. Porta-pottie provided. We'll also visit nearby hot springs. Near-dark moon will mean great stars and meteors. Plan to stay up late for best viewing. Learn about the Black Rock Desert on this easy car-camp. Expect a sizeable group as they'll be setting up for the Burning Man event and crew members usually stop by. LNT, be prepared to clean up after any dogs. Sign up after 8/1. DL. August 10-12 (Friday-Sunday) 2:00PM Fri
Summit Twin Springs Fence Removal
. Volunteers will be hiking out wire and posts from an exclosure (Strenuous). You need to be a good hiker and able to work at high altitude to attend. The route to the project can be extreme and requires high clearance vehicles. Transportation can be provided. All meals except lunch are provided. For full details contact Graham. DOK. Five Lakes and Two Snowbanks near Carson Pass/Hwy 88
. Hike from the ranger station to Frog, Winnemucca, Round Top, Emigrant and Caples Lakes. This is about a 12 mile loop hike with a vehicle shuttle. Elevation gain of about 1,500 feet with some cross country/boulder scrambling. Learn a bit about the history of the emigrant wagon trail in that area. Drivers will need $5.00 cash for parking fee. Navigation for Hikers
. As part of Cabela's Fall Great Outdoor Days, Sierra Club trip leader, Desert Rat, and SAR member David Book will be holding a map and compass class. This will cover use and selection of compasses, map reading, and we'll even touch on some gear to help you get home safely! Class will last about 1 hour. Gourmet Hike to Loch Leven
. This will be a great way to spend the day....hiking to a fabulous spot, taking a swim, and eating an array of gourmet foods. Everyone brings a dish to share (potluck style), but with a gourmet twist. The hike is 6 miles RT, but has 1,300 feet of elevation gain, making it a little more difficult.
