Tuesday Evening Easy Conditioning Hike
. Please join us for weekly easy evening conditioning hikes of 2 to 3 miles, in the valley and in the foothills, with minimal elevation gain. This is a great way to learn about the trails in our area, meet new people, discuss history, flora, and fauna as we hike, and get some great outdoor conditioning, all at the same time! May 2 (Wednesday) 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday Conditioning Hike
. After-work hikes are geared to build up stamina for the longer weekend outings. Faster paced, up to 1,200 feet of gain, and 4-5 miles in 2 hours. Will take time to observe different flora and fauna in the hills surrounding the Truckee Meadows. Bring water and trail shoes. Some trails do require dog leashes. Black Rock NCA Spring Dam Restoration
. Join Graham Stafford & Pat Bruce of Friends of Nevada Wilderness at Mustang Springs in the Black Rock NCA. We will be repairing a catchment dam at the spring. This trip involves a fairly strenuous hike. High clearance vehicles required. Transportation can be provided. All meals except lunch are provided. DOK. Kayak at Little Washoe Lake
. Get your kayak out of the garage for a leisurely trip around Little Washoe Lake and into the tributaries to the south end. Great bird watching opportunities. Must have life vest. May 5 (Saturday) 8:00 a.m.
McClellean Peak/Flume
. Historic Virginia City flume system on McClellan Peak near Carson City. Day hike. The hike will be along a portion of the route of the circa 1870 wooden box flume which brought water from the Carson Range to Virginia City. About 10 miles with less than 800 feet of gain. Some off trail. High clearance 4-wheel drive vehicle necessary, or possible ride share. Learn some history of the area. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Moderately Strenuous.

May 5 (Saturday) 9:00 a.m.
Technician Class Ham Radio Review Class
. A one day "FastClass" as part of a 3 day Amateur Radio convention. A one day review of all the questions on the entry level Amateur Radio License test followed by immediate testing! This will help you earn your Technician Class amateur radio license for enhanced safety and communication in the back country. Almost everybody who studies ahead of time passes! Learn about Amateur Radio, the back-up communication system on the International Space Station! Study info and more event info is on their website, emcommwest.org. We expect you to study ahead of time but the test and material are at a Middle School level. Instructor is a Sierra Club trip leader, Black Rock Desert Rat, Search and Rescue member, and has been doing amateur radio since 2003. Needle Rock and Big Mama
. We'll start by visiting the Needle Rock and look for the Indian head. Next we will summit Big Mama and make a loop trail out. On the way back we'll explore the monkey condos. Observe desert flora and fauna. Trip around 8 miles with about 1,500 elevation gain. Great views of Pyramid lake. Bring layers. Poles helpfull. DOK. Spanish Springs Peak
. Moderate Day Hike/Peak Bag of Spanish Springs Peak at 7406 feet Expect lots of glorious wildflowers; and if we're lucky we'll see a few antelope and golden eagles. Five miles and 1,500 ft to the summit; half of it cross-country across volcanic terrane. Learn local geology and wildlife. Moderate hike, not for beginners. DL. Reseeding Native Plants for Fire Recovery
. Join Graham Stafford & Brenna Archibald of the Nevada Outdoor School to reseed native plants in Tom Basin burn area/Santa Rosa Wilderness. The area is just outside of Winnemucca. Hunter Falls Dayhike
. Celebrate Mother's Day with a pleasant hike to Hunter Falls just outside of Reno. Trip is 6.5 miles RT and about 1,000 feet of gain. Observe flora, fauna, and the geology of this unique canyon. Star Peak
. Star Peak (9836') Hike to Star Peak the high point in the Humboldt Range and Pershing County. Learn about the Great Basin and the Great Basin Peak Section. About 11 mi. 4200' gain RT About a 3 hour drive from Reno. Meet early Tuesday or on Monday night at Rye Patch Dam. Trip Limit. ND. Gin Peak Dayhike
. We will hike up to the saddle of the Needle and then follow an animal trail with a small amount of rock scrambling, nothing technical. The elevation gain will be over 1,000 feet and around 6 miles RT. Wonderful views of Pyramid Lake as we hike to the top of Gin Peak, aka Big Daddy, with an elevation of 6,600 feet. We will discuss the fauna which is already starting it's new spring growth and the geology of the area. A very picturesque area. Bring plenty of water. Pah Rah Mtn Eclipse Hike
. Ridge ramble to two of the highest summits of the Pah Rah Range, Virginia Peak (8366') and Pah Rah Mtn (8240'). Panoramic vistas of Pyramid Lake and points north. Mostly cross-country over rolling volcanic terrane. Hope to see desert wildlife including eagles and antelope. The late start is to coincide with the annular solar eclipse which occurs late that afternoon, and we expect to view as we get back to our vehicles. Ten miles round-trip, 1000 ft. elev. gain. DL. Black Rock Rendezvous
. One of the premier events on the Black Rock NCA. Educational programs and tours will help you to become familiar with the special features of the NCA, and meet the partner groups in the area. We will be taking the lead on the restoration component of the event, which will include, route restoration, tamarisk removal, and general clean-up. May 25, - May 28 Exploratory Car Camp SHELDON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
. 30 miles west of Denio, Nevada, refuge was created in '30s to protect pronghorn habitat, this natural area ripe with 300 species birds,mammals, fish & reptiles. Good gravel roads; high clearance vehicles recommended, 4 wd not required, but no trailers. Elevations 4-7,000 ft. Be ready for any weather: snow flurries to sun. Bring full tank gas, (extra can recommended) , shovel, all your own drinking water (3 gals./person), food, camping gear, warm winter clothing including hat, mittens, jacket, long underwear, hiking boots. BLACK ROCK RENDEZVOUS
. A long weekend of tours, visits to hot springs, speakers, raffles, a dutch oven cook-off, and similar events on the edge of the Black Rock Desert. A great "first trip to the Black Rock" since you can learn your way around with people who already know the area! RV's and trailers OK. Most events are happening on Saturday and Sunday. NOW FREE!! Grimes Point Wyemaha Valley
. We will drive out to Grimes Point, just southeast of Fallon, we're we'll start our hike. We'll fallow a route laid out by the UNR Geology Department to view some of the geological features in the area. And if we're lucky we'll find some Nevada Wonderstone.
