August 1 (Sunday) 8:00AM - 4:30PM
Mt Judah & Donner Peak Loop
. Following the Pacific Crest Trail southward, we'll be on a broken granite trail for 1/2 mile or so. Soon we'll turn onto the side trail to Donner Peak, with its grand Window-to-the-East vista point. Traversing the short trail to nearby Mt Judah at ~8,200 ft elevation, we'll reach excellent 30-50 mile vistas. Next we'll descend to the TRT for a visit to Roller Pass & then head back. Wednesday Fast-Paced Conditioning Hike

Moderate Conditioning Hike

Hawkins Peak near Carson Pass
. Day hike up 10,020-foot high Hawkins Peak near Carson Pass. About 1,500 feet of gain in a loop of about five miles. Mostly off trail. Scenic. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Moderate.

August 7 (Saturday) 8:30 a.m.
Stanislaus Peak (11,239')
. Trek along the crest of the central Sierra, just north of Sonora Pass. Most of the route is above 10,000' on existing trail, but the final summit ascent is cross country over rocky terrain. Learn about the volcanic geology of the Sonora Pass area. Great vistas. Ten miles round-trip, 1800 feet of elev. gain. DL. Leader: Ridge Walker (853-8055; edc@unr.edu). August 8 (Sunday) 8:30 a.m.
Granite and Grouse Lakes Dayhike
. From Blue Lakes we will hike to two beautiful and remote lakes. This is a good hike to be mindful of our water resources and conservation. Superb scenery through out the route. The length of this hike makes it a strenuous endeavor for conditioned hikers. Approximately 13 miles with about 1500' gain in elevation. Limit 10. ND. Truckee River afternoon/evening digital photography instruction
. Meet retired professional photographer Graham Stafford in front of the California Bldg. in Idlewild Park at 5:30 PM Wednesday August 11. We will walk along the Truckee River as Graham gives instruction on the proper use of your digital camera and general photography. Graham will also spend personal time with each person and their camera. Bring your camera with the battery fully charged---empty memory card and instruction book. Perseid Meteor Shower in the Black Rock
. A near-dark moon will provide great stars and good viewing for the Perseid Meteor shower. Car Camp with a group of assorted playa rats out in the flat, wide-open Black Rock Desert and visit nearby hot springs during the daytime. Learn about the Black Rock Desert. DL. August 15 (Sunday) 8:00 AM
Flowers at Ebbett's Pass
. This hike will follow the Pacific Crest Trail north toward Pennyslvania Creek, off Ebbett's Pass. Incredibly scenic high Sierra views, with wildflowers blooming at their peak. Elevation gain less than 1000 feet, starting at about 8000 feet. Distance about 8 miles round-trip. Moderate hike, but at high altitude. DL. Tamarack Peak & Waterfall Loop
. After an hour on the northbound Tahoe Rim Trail to the waterfall, we'll go OFF-trail upward on the steep western slope of Tamarack Peak to reach a large rock outcrop for lunch & full view of Lake Tahoe 1/2 mile below us. Then we'll continue OFF-trail over the Peak's 9,900 ft. summit and we'll descend the gradual eastern ridgeline to finally rejoin the TRT. About 6 miles RT and 1,300 ft total ascent. DOK. Galena Creek Dayhike

August 22 (Sunday) 11:00 a.m.
Great Basin Group Annual Picnic
. Mark your calendars for an afternoon of fun, good eats, and socializing in the beautiful setting of the forest at Galena Creek. The picnic will be located at the Manzanita Group site at the south entrance to the park. We will provide soft drinks, water, and hot grilled burgers. Bring a potluck dish to share. August 25 (Wednesday) The day PRIOR
Mt. Whitney Dayhike
. Accepting names for possible alternates on a DAY HIKE up Mt. Whitney and back in one day. 22 miles R/T total; 6,000 feet of elevation gain. Whitney at 14,494 feet is the highest peak in the 'Lower 48". STRENUOUS; hikers MUST be fit and experienced. Due to the way applications/permits by the Rangers are handled, the group members had to be pre-determined, and limited, with fees paid in advance. If any of the present hikers cancel, I will consider alternates for their reserved slot. Contact me early for all the details, and to get on the list of possible alternates. ND. Moonlight Picnic Supper

August 28 (Saturday)
Emigrant Lake in Mokelumne Wilderness hike
. We will hike along Caples Lake 2 1/2 miles then follow a beautiful stream through alpine forest up to Emigrant Lake. Emigrant Lake is one of those glacier formed alpine jewels. It sits in a bowl with cliffs and will probably still be surrounded with wildflowers. 8 mile round trip. 800 ft. elevation gain. Moderate. DOK. August 28 (Saturday) 7:30 A.M.
Mt. Rose Summit
. If you have always wanted to climb to the top of Mt. Rose, this would be the time to do it! We will do the almost 10 miles and 2000 ft. of elevation gain at a gentle pace and would encourage first-timers to join us. This will be a 7 to 8-hour day, as we will take time to enjoy the great vistas and the lingering willdflowers. Please call one of the leaders for more information. ND. August 28 (Saturday) 7:30AM
Overlook Way Above Sand Harbor
. We'll first ascend ~1,700 ft on Tunnel Creek Rd to intersect the southbound Tahoe Rim Trail. Within 3 miles,the rising & falling TRT leads us over a ridge at 9,100 ft, to reach the spectacular view of Lake Tahoe's turquoise Sand Harbor from our white-granite vantage point 1/2 mile directly above. August 29 (Sunday) 8:30 a.m.
Chimney Beach to Marlette Lake
. This is a less traveled route to Marlette Lake with fantastic views of Lake Tahoe. We'll climb from Highway 28 to Marlette Lake Dam and then follow the lake south until we connect up with the trail to Spooner Lake. We'll then turn off the Spooner Lake trail to curve around north again and meet up with the trail back to the cars. About 9 miles, 1500+ feet of gain. DOK. Leader: Donna N.
