December 5 (Saturday) 8:30-4:00 PM
Churchill Butte Dayhike
. Third in a series of the highest peaks in the local mountain ranges. Churchill Butte, near Silver Springs. We will scale the butte, overlooking historic Fort Churchill, and portions of the emigrant wagon route, ancient and modern Lake Lahonton, the Pony Express Trail, and the Lincoln Highway. Learn a lot of history about the area. Dayhike is about 9.5 miles RT and has at least 1,800 feet of gain, all in the first four miles. Portions of the hike are off-trail with steep descents. ND. December 5 (Saturday) 6 - 10 pm
Holiday Party at Patagonia
. Patagonia Service Center (8550 White Fir St., Reno). Members and guests are all invited to attend the Great Basin Group holiday party at the Patagonia Outlet in northwest Reno. Located next to the Truckee River, Patagonia has again donated their facility for our party which promises to be a lot of fun! We will have live music, mixer games, door prizes, awards, and a slide show. Come meet your friends and celebrate our year. Partiers are asked to bring a dish and their beverage of choice. ND. Waterfall in Winter Dayhike
. Many of you are familiar with the waterfall on the Mt. Rose Trail...did you know that it freezes on the outside and keeps flowing in the winter? Learn about the Mt. Rose area. No cotton clothing, bad weather will cancel. Trip limit 10. DL. Leader: David Book (843-6443). Moderately Easy.

December 6 (Sunday) 9:00-4:00 PM
Spanish Springs Peak Dayhike
. Hike from Sparks to the Dry Lake Basin near Spanish Springs Peak. This basin is an unusual field of small rocks laid bare by erosion. View petroglyphs along the way and enjoy the autumn air. Elevation gain is a little over 1,000 feet and distance is 10 miles RT, mostly on dirt roads and some cross country. DL. Leader: David von Seggern (303-8461). December 13 (Sunday) 9:00-4:00 PM
Virginia Mountains Desert Dayhike
. Join us for a trek in this fabulous mountain range northeast of Reno. Destination will be determined depending upon weather conditions. Bad weather will cancel. Trip will be about 6-8 miles and 1,200 feet of possible gain. Views of the Pah Rah Range, Dog Skin Mountains, and possible Pyramid Lake. DOK. Leader: Holly Coughlin (331-7488). Moderate.

December 19 (Saturday)
Carson River Railroads near Moundhouse
. Dayhike of about 12 miles one way with a vehicle shuttle. Elevation gain of less that 1,000 feet. Hike along the scenic Carson River Canyon and learn about the two railroads of the Comstock era. Portions of the hike are cross-country. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Moderate.

December 19 (Saturday) 9:30-2:00 PM
Ridgeline to Tamarack Peak Snowshoe
. For this popular destination, we'll ascend 1,000 feet largely off-trail. Within 2.5 miles we'll reach Tamarack Peak at 9,900 feet summit for our lunch and breath-taking views of the whole 22 miles down Lake Tahoe and it's surroundings. Snowshoes required, with perhaps 3 feet of new snow. Total trip 5 miles RT and 1,000 feet of gain. DOK. Leader: Gary Hanneman (336-7698; gphanneman@charter.net). Moderate.
