Juniper Peak, Truckee Range
This makeup hike included only Martin Mace and David von Seggern. We scaled Juniper Peak in the Truckee Range with low clouds and light snow all day. This is a seldom-visited peak with only about a dozen signins in the last 10 years. A large cairn marks the 7209-foot peak.
Black Rock tour & hot springs
David Book led groups from the Sierra Club & Friends of the Black Rock/High Rock on a tour of the Black Rock and its hot springs. A grand time was had by all.
Carson Pass Wildflower Study Hike
Beginning at the Carson Pass Information Center off Hwy. 88, our trail led us to Frog Lake and on to Winnemucca Lake crossing one snow field -- suprising to see snow on this trail so late in August. The spectacular display of wildflowers along the way was breathtaking! The heavy winter snowfall and cool spring had delayed the flowers nearly a month this year, we were very fortunate to arrive at "peak bloom". Our leisurely pace allowed for photography and wildflower identification,(we identified over 40 species). Graham Stafford was most helpful in sharing his expert advice on camera settings and techniques. Hike leaders were Melanie Scott and Joy Bridgeman.
Perfect day for hiking, swimming and gourmet lunch. Leaders Valerie Anderson and Grace C. Caudill.
Oxbow Nature Study Area Family Outing
Sue Jacox, director of the Great Basin Outdoor School, led this fun outing for kids at the Oxbow Nature Study Area. Steve Kemp of the Nevada Department of Wildlife showed pelts of the many mammals who frequent the nature area.
Damonte Wetlands Hike
A group of about 20 hikers walked this scenic 4.5 mile loop around the Damonte Wetlands led by Valerie Andersen. Silvia Villarreal took many of the best photos.
Pat Kleames loves to hike in the desert... especially near Pyramid Lake. This hike was called "pyramid ramble" and the group rambled with Pat in search of the great pyramid. In all honesty, the weather produced so much snow, the desert hike gave way to snowshoe full of fun and wonder up Whites Creek to Dry Pond
Coldstream Canyon XCountry
A bit icy but a beautiful day as the weather warmed up. Moderately easy ski up the U-shaped Coldstream Valley behind Donner Memorial State Park in Truckee. Leader: Ridge Walker (aka Ed Corbett) Co-Leader: Valerie Andersen
Ophir Creek Overlook Snowshoe
Turned into a great snowshoe with 25+ of us enjoying the snow in the forest for the first hour, then rising up to open mountain side with vistas of foggy Lk Tahoe nearly 3,000 ft below. We had a 'magical' several minutes with 30-40 chickadees swarming & swooping right among us as we snowshoed to the Overlook. An unforgettable 5-hour hike today by several measures. Leaders Gary Hanneman & Karen Todd.
Gary's friends and followers give him a fun send off...
New Years Day Hike - 2011
This hike was a short, 3-hour walk in northwest Reno. About two inches of new snow had fallen, but this did not affect the hike at all.
